The Pleasures of Ephemera
I was sitting at my desk watching the boys race Matchbox cars around the floor, so I started piecing through my bin of collage ephemera. It gave me so much pleasure to sort through it all--the different juxtapositions of things falling together at random, the little stories in each scrap of paper.
It's a shift in mindset for me to welcome the pleasure of these objects without doing anything more. No art-making or other means to an end. No greater purpose.
Something I've been slowly learning--and I hesitate to mention it because it reeks of immaturity--is that just because I want to do something doesn't mean I have to do it. In my drive to keep learning and accomplishing things, in my persistence to never settle, I have lost sight of this simple truth. Every choice is, when made thoughtfully, an intricate balancing act--and some things are excluded by nature of that process.
This is why, coincidentally, I love the art of collage.
