The Monarchs are Back
I've been keeping a running tally of all the Monarch butterflies I've seen this year.
Two on the echinacea in the front yard and three or four by the roadsides as I was driving to work.
Today we saw nearly half a dozen, in the meadow behind the children's museum. I turned over the leaves of the milkweed plants and didn't find any caterpillars, but I did find one teeny tiny little egg. I pinched off the leaf and took it home with me. If it hatches, we'll build a little butterfly habitat.
Next year I'm giving up on the raised vegetable garden and planting milkweed there instead. And maybe some parsley, to attract swallowtails. Butterflies are much more exciting than basil and broccoli.
