As a writer, I've always been interested in family stories. When I heard of a Satanic cult in my family tree, I thought I'd found the story of a lifetime. Read more.

Five Things That are Inspiring Me Lately

Five Things That are Inspiring Me Lately

1. The photographer Jennifer MacNeil. If The Skeleton Club ever becomes a movie, I want it to look like her photos. I love how they feel dark and mysterious without ever being heavy or depressing. She lives in Lancaster like me, and it's thrilling to me to see a familiar world through such a brilliant lens.

2. This excerpt from Dinty Moore's new book, The Story Cure: How to Revise a Draft Without Going Crazy

You can approach revision thinking, “Hey, here’s my chance to get it right. Let’s play around.”

Too many areas of life don’t afford you a second chance, but writing does, and you should see that as a good thing.

3. The artist Janey's Journey. She has such a fun sense of color and pattern. This cat, you guys! If I ever got a tattoo, it would be that cat.

4. The Handmaid's Tale. I bought a paperback copy of the book in Baltimore yesterday, even though I already have the ebook version on my phone. It is so good.

5. This interview with Elizabeth Strout, about truth and memory. I read her first novel, Amy and Isabelle, ages ago and remember nothing of it. But this interview makes me want to read her entire oeuvre.

What's inspiring you lately? Let me know in the comments.
