Emotional Contagion, Toddler Edition
It became clear to me, the other day, how much our oldest is modeling our behavior. I was looking for a magazine. My husband said he'd thrown it away; the baby had been ripping it apart and he thought I'd finished reading it, anyway.
"Well, I wasn't finished reading it" I said, barely masking my frustration. "And you should have asked first."
"I'M VERY UPSET," our son announced. "I wanted to read that magazine, and it was mine, and Daddy threw it away."
I realized then that much of his behavior stems from him modeling our bad moods. And trying to empathize in the only way he knows how.
